WHY:
It is only fitting then for me to admit that I am wrote this book out of obedience to God. Since God has instructed me to write this book, I believe that God has prepared an audience from His own to benefit from His hand in my life experiences. In this way, my book functions like an extended testimony: one in which I (and indeed God) invite you to share. But in truth there are two authors to this book: myself and God. Ultimately, God is the original author of my experiences, and I am simply trying to faithfully record them as I understand them and live them.
I believe it is important to emphasize that miracles happen not merely for sensational amusement nor do they only show the reality and power of God, but they reveal the heart of God for the world.
SUMMARY:
This book is aimed to inspire you to realize that the supernatural realm need not be mysterious to you: indeed, the supernatural can and should be natural as the need presents itself, God’s will permits, and your faith daring. This book is my extended testimony of God’s faithfulness and power in my life, and it is a testimony, which I invite you to share in your reading and in your life.
Yet, this book is not about me (for I am simply a “jar of clay” as Paul declares in 2 Cor 4:7) nor is it necessarily about miracles (for they are merely confirmatory signs pointing to Someone). Forbid that we should be a generation which demands a sign to believe, or worse … to be entertained (Mt. 12:39: Mk. 8: 12: Lk 11:29). No, my heart in this book is not merely to point people to the phenomenal but to the triune phenomenon — the lover of our souls who is God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is about rediscovering the heart of God who wishes to intervene in and transform our lives.
The truth is that Western Christianity (as is found in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Canada, and the United States) is in some ways at a disadvantage since it is so influenced by western secular culture which is characterized by an attitude of doubt and distrust of anything supernatural or miraculous. By contrast, where Christianity is spreading most rapidly (in places such as mainland China, South America, and Africa), there are frequent testimonies of the manifestation of the miraculous signs of the Kingdom of God accompanying the preaching of the gospel. I believe that miracles are to be natural events for the Christian who believes in an omnipotent, benevolent God who hears and answers prayers. I have learned through my experience that our God has not changed, and in reading Scripture I have learned that this should not come as a surprise. It is this childlike trust in the loving and all-powerful character of our God (i.e., “faith”) that Western Christianity must recover.
Becoming familiar with the supernatural realm is not about an experimental exercise in mystical spirituality, but it is an extension of the desire to imitate Jesus, and to be counted among those believers whom Jesus spoke of as being accompanied by signs and wonders (Mark 16:17). Every believer’s heritage is to live the incredible adventure of radical and simple obedience to God, and in such surrender we invite an encounter with the phenomenal and more importantly through it an encounter with God Himself. I invite you to sit down, buckle your seat belt, and allow yourself to be caught in the wonder of God’s grace knowing this is your heritage.
